The Best Practices For Web Security

Web security is one of the most important parts to any online business. Without it, you could be subject to financial losses and data breaches. Your clients could be subject to their data and credit card information being exposed as well. So what’re some best practices?

Stronger Passwords

This is just a basic start. Don’t use easy passwords. There are computer bots which run this logic in password forms looking for easy prey. Also, don’t use the same passwords on different sites. Because if they hack one password on GoDaddy, bet your bottom dollar they are going to try it on Google. Anyone want your emails posted all over hacker sites? I think not.

2-Step Authentication

Tie your phone to your accounts. This means Google, GoDaddy, and Facebook, just to start. This way, if the hacker doesn’t have your phone, then it will be near impossible for them to get your passwords.

Password Managers

Password managers, such as LastPass, offer a bevy of conveniences. One is protection. Sure, LastPass is online and could be hacked, but if you use 2-step as mentioned above, you will have no issue. And really, do you want to have to type in a ton of passwords all day? If you are a small business, that would be really time-consuming. Go to Lastpass.com, get the free version, be amazed.

Don’t Keep Docs Named “Passwords” on your computer.

Did you know one of the easiest ways to hack your passwords is to simply hack your computer and search for files with obvious names? This happens all the time. Whether someone wants to hack your home Wifi or you are on Wifi at Starbucks, believing that your passwords are safer saved to a document on your computer is a myth. Run your virus checker and virus scan regularly. Better yet set it to run every night.  Also be sure to have all your security applications installed and updated.

Tips To Having Improved Web Security

People personally get hacked all the time. Websites constantly get hacked all the time. But how much of this is preventable? Well, kind of a lot, in fact. Hackers go for the weakest links, the most efficient routes to success. The less secure you are, the more of a target you become.

Use Two Step Authentication.

Two-step authentication means you use your device (smartphone) to verify logins. For example, when you log in to Gmail, it can send you a text which includes a code. You input this code in a box during the Gmail login process and then it allows you to log in. This means that if someone steals or guesses your password, they need access to your text messages to get in. You can verify devices, so not to worry, you don’t have to do it every time, just when you log in from new, unique devices (or after you clear your browser cache).
Google, Godaddy, Facebook, Lastpass and many other services offer two-step. Some allow you to use Google Authenticator (an app for your phone) over text messages. Facebook has their own code generator, or you can use text. This is a huge area that helps prevent hacking.

Website security.

If you have a website, you probably use WordPress. I’m not clairvoyant, it’s just that 90 percent of the web is using WordPress these days. And due to that, hackers love it. But not to fear, you can secure your website.
-Check with the host and see if they have IP verification for FTP. Many hosts will only allow FTP from approved IPs. If you FTP, or your website person FTP’s, you can easily get the IP approved by submitting a host ticket. (unfortunately, GoDaddy hosting doesn’t do this currently).
-Don’t install WordPress plugins unless they are highly rated. WordPress plugins can leave a trail for hackers who know how to expose them to gain access to your website. Plugins are great but don’t get overly caught up in them.
-Install Google Webmaster Tools. If you don’t know how, either learn or have someone do it. They can detect unsavory activity on your website and quickly alert you. The faster you know things are going wrong, the easier they are to fix.
